Independent celebrates its 15th anniversary and aims for the future / Donna Huanca

As New York’s two-week art fair closes, the 15th Independent is bringing new life to the art world in New York. Independent has evolved as a platform for young artists and galleries to participate in a broad dialogue that attracts passionate and informed exhibitors, curators and collectors. Instead of creating a separate section for the new gallery, Independent chooses a flat approach where all levels of galleries display side by side.Another highlight of this exhibition is Donna Huanka’s work “MAGMASSLIT #3 (SUMMER)” (2021), presented by Peres Projects. The work recalls the moment in 2016 when she first presented Juanca’s work at Independent and brought her career to the world stage. “When we displayed her work here, the response was immediate,” says founder Javier Perez. “In a near-mad reaction, people began to learn about her work. Donna has already worked as an artist for 15 years. Since then, I have been able to communicate with people and plant seeds that have continued to this day.”Donna Huanka. For her, clothes serve as a powerful script for the human body: “Clothes are reminiscent of the body and contain its shape and spirit.”She’s a girl from Funka Skipios in 2017. “285 x 190 cm” “82,786/2222” ·”Sotheby”In Scipios, writers hide the shape aspects of the human body through intentional abstraction and discover surprisingly powerful and organic images. She distill the shape with a textured and tactile catalyst that allows her to face instinctive reactions to human forms and unconscious associations. The lively patchwork mimics the delicate mottled characteristics of the skin, and the sluggish spherical patch gathers around the pressure point to express wrinkles and sighs under the surface. Juanca’s remarkable mixture of prism colors reinforces the concept of skin barriers, where the physical world interacts with us.Sotheby’sDonna Huanka. MAGMA 1, 2017-2018. This includes an abstract collection of various arrangements of dyed and deformed clothes, a canvas marked with makeup, and objects reminiscent of glass boxes and mirrors. References to origin, memory, time, and identity appear throughout Juanca’s work, which evokes the complex influence that forms us. I’ve been collecting textures and fibers that will make me a performer’s shell for several years using the materials I got during my trip. Inspired by the natural color, I am very interested in the texture and surface that originated in geology and botany.Donna HuancaDonna Huanka. They are emotional green cave gods. (D.F.)
